Intensive outpatient treatment, around your life
Nova Recovery Center’s intensive outpatient program runs three evenings a week for about eight weeks in Austin, Houston and Colorado Springs, so you can keep working, studying or caring for your family while you are in treatment.
IOP suits two kinds of people: those stepping down from inpatient care, and those who know they have to make a change but cannot commit to a residential program.
Starting is usually the hardest part. Worrying what other people will think, or whether it will work at all, is normal. It is not a reason to wait.

What we treat in outpatient care
Our intensive outpatient programs are built for people moving on from inpatient care, and for people who need to make a change but cannot step out of their lives to do it.
-
Alcohol
Withdrawal can be life-threatening without medical care. We monitor vital signs and use medications when needed to reduce symptoms and complications.
-
Opiates and opioids
From prescription painkillers to illicit opioids like fentanyl, our programs help manage physical dependence and intense cravings.
-
Benzodiazepines
Stopping medications like Xanax, Valium and Ativan slowly, with a doctor’s help, is important. Stopping suddenly can lead to seizures and more anxiety.
-
Cocaine
While not physically addictive in the same way as opioids, cocaine detox requires emotional and psychological stabilization.
What the program covers
The group meets three times a week in a clinical setting. The sessions are where clients learn about alcohol and drug addiction, work through personal issues, and are taught how to live a sober life.
-
Topics covered
- Social skills
- Restructuring thoughts
- Relapse prevention
- Family dynamics
- The science of addiction
- Problem solving
-
Why eight weeks
The full program lasts about eight weeks, which gives you consistency, accountability and the time to actually practice the skills rather than just hear about them. The focus throughout is life skills, relapse prevention and peer support.
How the treatment is delivered
Every outpatient plan is personalized, and each of these four methods does something the others do not. Together they make the program.
-
Individual drug counseling
One-to-one sessions addressing the mental and emotional side of addiction, and the personal growth that recovery asks for.
-
Group counseling
Group work improves communication, brings other views on addiction into the room, and builds self-esteem through shared experience.
-
Educational lectures
Understanding addiction lowers the chance of relapse and supports staying sober. It can change how you use, or do not use, after rehab.
-
12-step program
Clients engage with the 12-step program to support sober reintegration into everyday life outside the group room.

What an intensive outpatient program is
Treatment needs change as recovery goes on. After a rehab program, an IOP is how you keep working on it: organized treatment and counseling that lets you live substance-free without 24-hour supervision.
It is offered in Houston and Austin at an affordable price, and we work with most insurance companies to supplement the cost. Our admissions team can quickly check your insurance and help you see whether it is a good financial fit.
-
More flexibility
IOP lets you go to school, work and meet other commitments while you focus on recovery education and preventing relapse, at home or in a sober living house.
-
Structure
Weekly group sessions connect treatment to daily life and help build the routines that lower the chance of relapse.
-
A sober support system
IOP builds connection and support among people in recovery, which is where a lot of the lasting change actually comes from.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is an intensive outpatient program for drug addiction and alcohol addiction?
An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is a form of rehabilitation. It provides greater support than standard outpatient rehab, yet it does not require round-the-clock supervision. It typically includes group therapy, individual and family therapy, and evidence‑based therapies like CBT for substance use disorders. Patients can maintain jobs or school while attending sessions 3–5 times per week.
What does an IOP rehabilitation program include?
An IOP treatment program includes individual therapy sessions, group therapy, family therapy, psycho education about addiction, relapse prevention training, and skills for coping. Some centers offer art therapy, music therapy, and talk therapy. Programs use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and other evidence-based approaches.
How long does intensive outpatient rehab last?
Most IOPs run for six to twelve weeks, with about 9–20 hours of treatment per week. Typical schedules are three-hour sessions, three to five days weekly. Some programs last longer depending on severity and recovery goals.
Who is a good candidate for an IOP?
Ideal candidates are people with mild to moderate substance use disorder. They should have a stable home or sober living situation. They also need to have responsibilities like work or school. Doctors do not recommend IOP if you need medical detox. Also, it is not suitable for severe mental health disorders or other conditions. A baseline medical and psychiatric evaluation helps determine if IOP is appropriate.
How does IOP compare to inpatient rehab?
Unlike inpatient rehab, where patients live onsite with round‑the‑clock care, IOP lets patients live at home or in a sober living program. It provides almost the same types of therapy, such as group therapy, family therapy, CBT, and relapse prevention. However, it offers a more flexible schedule. Care intensity is between standard outpatient and partial hospitalization.
Is intensive outpatient rehab covered by insurance?
Many treatment facilities are in-network with major insurance plans and can assist in verifying coverage. Some programs also accept Employee Assistance Programs or offer sliding scale fees. Payment options include insurance, HSAs, credit, or self-pay.
Can IOP help after detox or inpatient treatment?
Yes. IOP is commonly used as a step-down from inpatient or detox programs. It helps individuals build in-community support, manage triggers, adjust to daily life, and practice coping skills.
What therapies are used in intensive outpatient programs?
IOPs utilize a wide range of evidence-based therapies, including CBT, motivational enhancement, contingency management, community reinforcement, and family therapy. They may also offer art therapy, music therapy, and peer support groups like Narcotics Anonymous.
Will IOP treat co-occurring mental health conditions?
Yes. Dual-diagnosis care treats both substance use and mental illnesses together. It uses a combined treatment plan. Programs typically involve licensed mental health professionals alongside addiction specialists.
What’s the goal of an IOP recovery program?
The goal is sustained recovery, improved quality of life, and relapse prevention. Clients learn coping skills and rebuild relationships through family therapy. They connect with support groups and improve their mental wellness, all without needing to stay in a residential facility.
