Having a dedicated mentor to guide you through 12-Step Facilitation can make all the difference. At Nova Recovery Center, we understand how helpful peer recovery support can be. That’s why we offer a personalized program in our drug and alcohol rehab.

The Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) program connects Nova clients with a certified Peer Recovery Specialist. This specialist offers support and guidance during the early recovery process. The support is available at different stages of the substance abuse treatment program, including:

  • When a client transitions out of detox
  • When a client transitions out of residential treatment
  • When a client is admitted into IOP
  • When a client is admitted into sober living
  • When a client leaves a detox or residential treatment facility to go home

The PRSS program is free for clients during the 90-day rehab program. You can also use it for a year or more. The amount of time spent in the program will vary depending on the client’s recovery needs.

Recovery Support Services Provided

Treatment center profile: One week before the client leaves, a MAP professional will meet with the client. They will talk in person or by phone to check treatment needs. They will also create a personalized plan for ongoing care.

  • Clients have support sessions every week and every two weeks.
  • During the first 90 days of the program, they receive four sessions each month.
  • These sessions are with their Peer Support Specialist.

After the first 90 days, clients will meet with their Peer Recovery Support Specialist. These meetings will happen every two weeks. They can also meet more often if needed, depending on their risk level.

You can get live recovery support services 24/7. Clients and their “Primary Support” loved ones can call MAP anytime. They can receive help when they need it most.

Family support: “Primary Support” loved ones also receive two sessions per month with MAP. When the client completes the PRSS program, MAP will facilitate a family phone call to ensure a smooth transition.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a Peer Recovery Support Specialist?

A Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) is a person with lived experience in addiction recovery who is trained to support others in similar situations. They provide emotional support, mentorship, and help clients navigate the recovery process across various levels of care, such as detox, inpatient, and outpatient programs.

How does peer support help in addiction recovery?

Peer support enhances recovery by offering non-clinical, empathetic guidance from someone who has experienced addiction and recovery firsthand. It helps individuals stay accountable, reduce isolation, build confidence, and remain engaged in treatment and aftercare programs.

What are the responsibilities of a Peer Recovery Support Specialist?

Their duties include: Conducting regular one-on-one support sessions Monitoring early warning signs of relapse Helping create personalized recovery plans Supporting transition phases between levels of care Assisting clients and families with emotional and practical support

Is peer recovery support the same as therapy?

No. Peer recovery support is non-clinical and based on shared lived experience, whereas therapy involves licensed mental health professionals. However, both can work hand-in-hand within a comprehensive treatment program.

Who qualifies to become a certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist?

Requirements typically include: At least 1–3 years of personal recovery Certification through a national body like NAADAC Completion of peer recovery training (60+ hours) High school diploma or equivalent Passing a certification exam

What is the benefit of 12-Step Facilitation with peer support?

12-Step Facilitation provided by a Peer Support Specialist encourages consistent participation in NA or AA. It improves long-term engagement, supports relapse prevention, and provides ongoing accountability between formal levels of treatment.

When should someone begin using a Peer Recovery Support Specialist?

Clients can benefit from peer support at many points in recovery: Right after detox Post-residential treatment When entering outpatient or sober living During transitions back to home life
