The substances we detox from

Each detox plan is built for one person. It manages withdrawal safely and prepares you for long-term recovery, and what that involves depends on what you have been using.

These are the substances we treat most often. If yours is not on the list, it does not mean we cannot help. It means the plan is worth a conversation.

  1. Alcohol

Withdrawal can be life-threatening without medical care. We monitor vital signs and use medications when needed to reduce symptoms and complications.

  2. Opiates and opioids

From prescription painkillers to illicit opioids like fentanyl, our detox programs help manage physical dependence and intense cravings.

  3. Benzodiazepines

Stopping medications like Xanax, Valium and Ativan slowly, with a doctor’s help, is important. Stopping suddenly can lead to seizures and more anxiety.

  4. Cocaine

While not physically addictive in the same way as opioids, cocaine detox requires emotional and psychological stabilization.

  5. Heroin

Our compassionate team provides 24/7 support during heroin withdrawal, using medications and therapy to reduce discomfort and promote stability.

  6. Methamphetamine

Meth detox can cause extreme fatigue, depression and anxiety. We help ease these symptoms in a structured, supportive setting.

  7. Prescription drugs

We assist individuals taking medications such as Adderall, Ambien or painkillers, concentrating on their physical symptoms and psychological well-being through prescription drug detox.

  8. Synthetic drugs

Detox from synthetic cannabinoids, bath salts or designer stimulants is managed with careful observation and individualized treatment plans.

Not sure which of these applies, or using more than one?

Say so on the call. The plan is built around what you have actually been taking.

The four levels of detox care

Detox programs are tailored to your needs, with safety and comfort as the priorities. There are multiple levels of care, chosen around your medical history, your substance use and your recovery goals.

  1. Inpatient detox

Residential detox with 24/7 medical monitoring in a safe, supportive environment. This is the right level for anyone at risk of severe withdrawal or managing a co-occurring condition.

  2. Outpatient detox

If your symptoms are mild to moderate and you have good support at home, outpatient detox lets you get treatment without moving in.

  3. Medication-assisted treatment

FDA-approved medications such as buprenorphine or naltrexone, used to manage cravings and withdrawal symptoms where they are appropriate.

  4. Individual and group therapy

Therapeutic support matters during detox, not only after it. One-to-one counseling and peer groups help you stay grounded, process what you are feeling and build motivation for treatment.

Not sure which level you need?

A medical screening on the call decides it, not a guess.

After detox: what comes next

Detox is the beginning, not the treatment. Once you are stable, we move you into the next phase without a gap, into programs designed to address what is underneath the addiction.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is drug detox, and how does it work?

Drug detox is the process of removing drugs or alcohol from the body. This happens while doctors help manage withdrawal symptoms. A professional drug detox center provides medications and therapy to ease discomfort and prepare you for ongoing treatment. Detox alone is not treatment, it’s the necessary first step toward recovery.

How safe is alcohol detox in a medical setting?

Unsupervised alcohol detoxification can pose serious risks. In a certified detox facility, healthcare professionals monitor vital signs. They employ established techniques to avert complications such as seizures and delirium tremens. Effective detoxification greatly minimizes danger and enhances patient comfort.

How do you detox from opiates and opioids safely?

Opiates and opioids like heroin or fentanyl require careful medical detox. Withdrawal symptoms typically begin within 12–30 hours. At Nova, doctors use medication-assisted treatment (MAT) with buprenorphine or methadone. This helps ease symptoms, reduce cravings, and prepare for treatment.

What should I expect during benzodiazepine detox?

You must taper benzodiazepines (e.g., Xanax, Valium) slowly during detox because of serious withdrawal risks like seizures. Patients in medical detox receive careful dose reductions and clinical monitoring to ensure safe stabilization and symptom relief.

Is cocaine detox painful or dangerous?

Cocaine withdrawal usually causes emotional and psychological symptoms, like depression and fatigue, rather than physical distress. Our detox environment offers structure and therapy support. This helps stabilize your mood and improve mental health during early recovery.

What makes heroin detox different from other substances?

Heroin detox can involve intense physical symptoms (muscle aches, nausea, diarrhea) combined with psychological cravings. Medical supervision and peer recovery support in a licensed facility help reduce discomfort and foster stability through the evaluation and stabilization stages.

How is methamphetamine detox managed medically?

Methamphetamine detox often leads to exhaustion, anxiety, and depression that can last weeks. Nova’s medically assisted detox offers support around the clock. It includes monitoring symptoms and personalized care. This helps make this tough time easier and lowers the chance of relapse.

Can I detox from prescription drugs like Adderall or Ambien?

Yes. Detoxing from prescription medications requires clinical oversight to manage withdrawal and underlying mental health issues. Our team makes a personal plan for each person. We combine medical care and behavioral health support to help safely complete detox.

Are synthetic drug detox programs different?

Synthetic drugs (e.g., designer stimulants or cannabinoids) have unpredictable withdrawal profiles. Our detox protocols include careful assessment and close observation. This helps support clients through serious psychological and physical symptoms.

Can someone perform detox at home without medical supervision?

Trying detoxification at home can be dangerous. Without professional supervision, people are more likely to experience relapse, dehydration, seizures, or other issues. Detox under clinical supervision enhances safety and long-term success.

How long is the detox process for different substances?

Detox timelines vary by substance and personal history. For example, alcohol withdrawal can last from a few days to a week. Benzodiazepines can require 3 to 14 days, while stimulants such as cocaine may occupy up to 3 weeks. Detox timelines vary based on age, health, substance type, and duration of use.

What happens after detox at Nova Recovery Center?

Detoxification marks just the initial phase of the recovery journey. Once stabilized, clients move into residential rehabilitation, outpatient programs, partial hospitalization (PHP), or sober ensuring continuous support for lasting recovery.
