What this assessment is, and what it is not

Lexapro is an SSRI antidepressant and it is not considered addictive. These questions are about something different: whether your use of it has drifted from the way it was prescribed, and whether it is affecting your life.

Lexapro is not a benzodiazepine, an opioid or a narcotic, and it is not a controlled substance. Dependence and withdrawal can still happen if you stop suddenly, which is why Nova’s own guidance is to taper with a clinician rather than stopping cold turkey.

The questions take a few minutes, they are confidential, and they are a starting point for reflection rather than a medical diagnosis. If the answers worry you, the first person to speak to is whoever prescribed it. Where alcohol or another substance is also in the picture, Nova treats substance use and mental health together.

What Lexapro is
An SSRI antidepressant
Controlled substance
No
Addictive
Not considered addictive
Stopping it
Taper with a clinician, never cold turkey

If you are thinking about stopping Lexapro, speak to your prescriber first. Nova’s line is for when a substance is involved as well.
