Winter is harder on people in recovery than the rest of the year: shorter darker days, fewer things to do outdoors, difficult memories around Thanksgiving and Christmas, and a real risk of seasonal affective disorder on top. The answer is a plan made before you need it. This page covers the kinds of activity worth planning, what each one asks of you in early recovery, and a checklist for building your own week.
How to Stay Sober During the Winter Months
Staying sober during any season can be difficult, but wintertime poses several additional threats to people in recovery and the winter season can have a profound effect on mood, activity levels, and mental health.
The days are shorter and darker, outdoor activities are limited, and memories surrounding Thanksgiving and Christmas can sometimes be difficult to cope with. People in recovery are also particularly vulnerable to a certain type of seasonal depression called seasonal affective disorder or SAD. SAD is most common during the winter months, however, it can also affect people during the summer months as well.1
If you’re recovering from addiction, it’s very important that you have a plan to fight off those winter blues. Staying connected with your peers in recovery and finding fun, sober activities to stave off boredom can go a long way!
Fortunately, here in Texas it is easy to stay active year-round, even through the cooler months, and there is plenty to do that does not involve alcohol. The guide below sets out the kinds of activity worth planning, on your own or with a group, and what each one needs from you in early recovery. None of it is focused on the bar scene, so the hardest part is getting out of the house.
